Characters

There are many different characters in the movie "Goodfellas" the main character is Henry Hill. He is a half Italian, half Irish man and he is involved with the Lucchese crime family. He is a very respected man, and he is always true to his word. He does what he has to do for his friends, and for his family. He has a wife and kids, but he also has a girlfriend on the side, but that is normal to him. He gets involved in cocaine trafficing, and eventually gets jail time. He then becomes a rat in order to save himself. The next charecter is Jimmy. Jimmy is a very well respected man. He used to do hits for the mob, so killing people is no big thing for him. He loves to rob places, ecspecially trucks. He is a bit older than Henry but they are great friends and they look out for each other. He is one of the people that gets ratted out when Henry tells the cops everything. Tommy is Henry's best friend. They have been doing everything since they were teenagers. He is a hothead however, and he lets his emotions get the best of him. It could be seen as the Napoleon Complex, because he is a short guy as well. He kills many people and this eventually kills him because he gets "whacked" by his own family. These are the three main characters and they all are tight knit, until drugs and murder tear them apart.

Conflicts in Goodfellas

Throughout the movie there are many different conflicts, from different ways to make money, where to dump bodies, marriage problems, and problems with the law. The biggest conflict would have to be when Henry is going to "get pinched" for the distribution of cocaine. This is such a big conflict because it is really where Henry has to decide what is more important to him, his friends that he's known all of his life, or his wife and kids. He decides to take his wife and kids, and this is very important because him doing that, takes down all of his friends and their organization. This actually leads to the making of this movie because Henry is the one who tells the entire story.

Relation to the Bonesetter's Daughter

Most people would look at this book and movie and say that there is absolutley nothing in common, but when the two are analyzed they have a lot in common. To start with is the family aspect. In both "Goodfellas" and "The Bonesetter's Daughter" they have a big extended families. With the Bonesetter's Daughter the extended family goes from GaoLing, to Precious Aunite, all the way to the Changs. In Goodfellas everyone in the movie is family, weather they'd be a cousin, aunt, uncle, in-law, they were all related. Another way that the two relate are the bad relationships between members in the family. In the Bonesetter's Daughter Ruth and LuLing have a terrible relationship and they don't get along well at all. In Goodfellas, Henry and his wife don't always see eye to eye. In fact, towards the end of the movie, it seems like every time they interact they are fighting. The last way that the two relate is that drugs took down a whole family. In the Bonesetter's Daughter, the Changs family fell because they became very addicted to the drug opium. In Goodfellas, Henry started selling and using cocaine. This led to his demise because he became addicted, and he also got caught selling it, which caused him to do jail time, and eventually rat out his family.

The different parts of the movie include Henry and his buddy Tommy hijacking trucks for money. THey also kill guys for reasons that are questionable to most, but justified in their eyes. The fall of Henry in the movie is when he starts to get involved with the cocaine industry and begins to use and sell cocaine. This leads to him being addicted to cocaine, and him going to jail for the distribution of it. In the end Henry becomes what they call a snitch, and rats out some of his closest friends.
